University of Salford Graphic Design Graduate Will Rawson

Graphic Design graduate Will Rawson has plans to stay in the north west to work in both freelance and to gain placement, now that he has completed his studies at the University of Salford.

I have just recently graduated from the University of Salford having officially started my design led life at Wigan School for the Arts 4 years ago. After completing my HND I enrolled at Salford and embraced the communication pathway, the route which I felt most suited my talents. Over the past 2 years I have been able to develop my own style further with the opportunity to work on some incredibly interesting and unconventional briefs. Some of my favourite projects have without a doubt been competition briefs. Though purposely set to be uncompromisingly tough I feel they have been a necessary factor in pushing me further to think of new ways around problems. My strengths lie in vector based illustration and branding and I am a stickler for detail and perfection within my work.

My influences are quite hard to pin. Though I work in a similar style throughout most of my projects I find that I am constantly seeking new and interesting sources with every brief that I work on. If I were to pick some of the designers that I have looked most often to for inspiration then I would have to say that André Beato and Jared Nickerson are some of my favourites. Their work is loud and expressive and I just find it irresistible to look at. Though it is important to look at the work of other designers I find that some of the most interesting ideas are usually born from the most unexpected places. As a result I never stop looking for inspiration, wherever I go.

My plans for the future now that I have graduated are to try and secure a variety of internships and freelance jobs, build further on my portfolio and ideally find permanent employment within the North-West. I find the prospect of working as part of a team within an agency or in-house studio incredibly exciting and it is something that I am constantly striving towards.
