Rachel Bennett is a recent graduate of the University of Huddersfield, but she is originally from just outside of Liverpool and is now back home after completing her degree. She displays a great array of talent from her studies and has a bright future ahead of her in the textiles industry.
I am a recent Textile Design graduate from the University of Huddersfield, originally from just outside of Liverpool, which is where I am currently based. I am a designer/illustrator inspired by a vast amount of sources and artists, from nature to inanimate objects, illustrators to fine artists such as Peter Blake and Rauschenberg. I enjoy working with both fashion and interiors and have produced numerous projects for both whilst at university.
After I completed my foundation course at Liverpool Community College, it taught me to be adventurous with experimentation and the unknown. This lead to the way in which I work now, I get excited at the thought of not knowing what the end result of the drawing is going to be. At university, I spent days producing drawings in unconventional methods. The idea of trying the unknown carried through into my current prints, which I digitally printed onto pre-pleated fabric.
I like having a story to my designs, allowing the viewer to interpret them in their own way, most recently being my project “An Inanimate Biography”, where it looks at the romanticising of eclectic objects found at places such as Spitalfields Market in London. Who owned these artefacts? What were they like? What was their story?
At the moment I am working on a few projects that are in their early stages, which include illustrations and patterns aimed for interiors and stationary. Currently in the process of starting up an Etsy shop where I will be selling my own products such as greetings cards, book marks, prints etc. I am aiming to get products ready in order to sell at upcoming craft fairs. At the moment I am also working on a commission, which is a collection of patterns for men’s fashion.
