UCLAN Graphic Design Student Steve Roberts
Steve Roberts is studying his graphic design trade over at UCLAN in Preston, he describes being ‘guided towards the design and creative world from a very young age, being “taught” to draw by my Grandad, so it was inevitable that I would end up somewhere in the creative world.’
Although at first he was struggling to be fully motivated for his course, he puts his recent resurgence and motivation down to the help and support of his tutors at university. They have helped him to grasp the theories and given him the tools to create the designs you see today. Steve describes that his inspiration comes from various sources but he really enjoys in keeping up with the work of agencies; The Chase, Landor & Pentagram.
Currently he is on a year out on placement and the real world experiences have really taught him a lot: ‘It’s helped me get stuck into the company and really helped me become a member of the team, I’ll be sad to leave my placement but I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into some nice open-minded and creative briefs back in uni (and also to get back up north!)’
It’s nice to see a creative designer not sold on the so-called ‘Big lights’ of London and the south, the rest of the year and beyond is concentrated on completing his studies at university before graduating and getting into the real world. ‘I’m a firm believer in hard work and I think it will pay off in the end.’
