Fashion Hits and Misses from The Golden Globes 2012 by Jessica Simm!
This week for the third year running saw British comedian Ricky Gervais once again host the 69th annual Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles, California. The awards ceremony was this year’s first of many, so let’s see whose wardrobe choices were a hit and who needn’t have bothered!
Angelina Jolie looked flawless in a white, floor length, satin Atelier Versace gown with a red flash across the shoulder; the actress also sported a scarlet Christian Louboutin clutch and red lips to match. However, even though Jolie topped the best dressed polls this year (voted for by audiences) she sadly didn’t pick up any awards. Another particular favourite of mine was Natalie Portman in a strapless, fuchsia pink Lanvin number. Nevertheless, the dress did not receive all positive comments as some thought the colour, “clashed with the red carpet” and “the puffed out skirt drowned her slim frame”.
Reese Witherspoon also wore a strapless gown, this time in the form of a scarlet, sweetheart neck lined Zac Posen dress; the gown had no other detailing yet Witherspoon was still one of the best dressed guests of the night. Mila Kunis wore a black, one shoulder, Grecian style gown which was obviously Dior.
Also wearing Dior was Monster actress Charlize Theron in a custom made nude gown with a plunging neckline and large slit emphasising her long leg length. This season’s monochrome trend also proved popular amongst guests with Claire Danes (who scooped the award for ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series’ for her role in Homeland) wearing a backless J. Mendel number and Kate Winslet in a floor length Jenny Packham gown, both in this style. Some, however, thought Winslet was playing it safe in her gown making herself look rather ‘mumsy’.
Not all dresses received such optimistic reviews as some leading ladies suffered major wardrobe malfunctions. Sarah Michelle Gellar attempted springs up-and-coming 90’s trend whilst still trying to keep the Golden Globes glamour, in a strapless Monique Luhuillier gown but completely failed as the dress was far too busy for this silhouette and she ended up looking awful. Girl of the moment Rooney Mara rocked one of my favourite looks – gothic elegance in a black Nina Ricci floor length gown, I thought she looked great. However, some critics felt otherwise describing it as ‘underwhelming’ and lacking any sort of style and detailing. Another ultimate fail on the night came in the form of American actress Amanda Peet. Peet wore a white, lace, tiered gown but as fashion magazine Cosmopolitan put it she looked more like a “multi-tiered wedding cake” rather than the picture of elegance and sophistication she had attempted.
So the Golden Globes 2012 saw quite a number of memorable wardrobe hits but unfortunately, with them came just as many misses. Hope you’ve enjoyed reading this week’s article, read next week to catch up on more up-and-coming fashion news. Feel free to leave your comments!
